From this point of view Rembrandt's self-portraits are without parallel. As humans, our face and body have incredible storytelling capabilities, so it makes sense that many artists take advantage of what's closest.Self-portraiture is the best way to experiment with various looks that you would never imagine trying on. Do an unusual hairstyle, wear bright makeup, put on a colored wig and clothing. Be sure that such a picture will instantly get hundreds of likes.During the Renaissance the genre benefitted from the ‘heroism’ of the artist and became truly popular with the increased wealth and interest in individuality.“In the 20th Century, the act of self-portraiture turns nasty and neurotic, a form of self-abuse,” writes Peter Conrad in his review of ‘The Self Portrait: A Cultural History’. By this time portraiture had become more naturalistic and more concerned with the individual. As the 16th century approached, artists began putting themselves more in the picture, physically, socially and stylistically. All in all, with the drawings and prints included, Rembrandt must have recorded his own likeness at least 85 times.Like Rembrandt and Goya, Vincent van Gogh often used himself as a model he produced over forty-three self-portraits, paintings or drawings in ten years. The self-portraits served various purposes. Some of them show him playing a role (a hunter, the Prodigal Son, Apostle Paul, etc.). On several occasions he posed as an artist, or as a painter in his studio.
